Opportunities to help
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
PSPG is a volunteer
run organization. There is no 'they' here. Anyone who has been around
the Guild for awhile has seen what can happen when we all work together
on a project. All help is needed and appreciated. Thank you to
everyone who has come forward so far.
Event Coordinators Events
are a vital way to keep our ships floating. Without these and other
fundraisers we would not have the money to do all of the great work
that we do on the ships. We need 1
person to be involved all the way through an events life, from the
planning before, to being on board during. We are building a list of
people to call once a booking has been made, people who are capable of
following though with everything the event needs. If
you think you could run at least one event next season or would like
more information about what that entails, please email Marston at Coolmarston@hotmail.com Membership Events How
many times have you heard people say "I've lived here my whole life
and I didn't know these ships were here"? Sometimes I think that the
PSPG is among Philadelphia's best kept secrets. We have a couple of
different types of outreach planned for this coming year from setting
up a table a local festivals (Shadfest) to helping talk with people
about the ships at larger information events. If you are able to be
support on any of these, please contact volunteer@gazela.org.
Weekend Cooking!!!! Want
to come down on the weekend to help but worried about the cold? A good
way to get your volunteer hours in and stay warm in the galley. Our
weekend cooks are some of the unsung stars amoungst Guild volunteers.
Often it's taken for granted but knowing there is a yummy, hot meal
aboard the ship makes coming down on the weekend a treat. While we have
many people on the cook's roster, life is busy and sometimes there are
days without sign ups. If you are interested in helping out please
contact the office at office@shipguild.com |
Everything Else
Knot a Class Do you know all your knots? Knot
a Class will be happening March 2, 1830-2000. Come to hang out with
friends, loads of line, a bunch of knot books and practice what you
need to.
This year the Knot a Class will also be project based. Have a ditty bag in mind, a sail cloth corset? Come work on it with company. Come meet with us at the Random Tea Room
RSVP required as space is limited. Contact Gina @volunteer@gazela.org
Annual Dinner
Do you know anyone that has contributed above and beyond to the ships. Every year we give an award to the Volunteer of the Year for both Gazela and Jupiter. Please email volunteer@gazela.org with suggestions for both positions. P
Ever wonder what made the blacksmith one of the most interesting & necessary trades in the shipyard? Now you can find out for yourself...
Beginning, intermediate, and advanced blacksmith workshops have been arranged for current Guild members in nearby Delaware City, at the blacksmith shop of Kerry Rhodes with former Kalmar Nyckel Blacksmith and PSPG member, Kellysmyth.
Half Day Introductory Workshops will be offered from one to five on Wednesday and Thursday (March 23 & 24). Learn by hammering hot metal from the forge at the anvil into a useful & decorative hook. ($45)
One Day Beginners' Workshops will be offered on Friday, Saturday and Sunday (March 25, 26, or 27) from nine to five. All first-timers start with a hook, then go from there. ($75)
Two or three day Intermediate Workshops will be also offered during the same period. Any one with some experience might want to take on more difficult or time consuming projects with guidance such as tongs, marlinspikes, punches or chisels, hinges, door pulls or kitchen utensils (Two days: $135 / Three days: $185)
Space is limited. For questions or to register contact Kelly Smyth via email at
Crew Uniforms
We will soon be placing this year's first Gazela Crew Uniform Order. Order forms with payment are due by Sunday, March 20th and the order will be in by the end of April. If you miss this order, the next one will be placed in late May or June (after the ship has left Philadelphia). The order form can be downloaded from the volunteer section of our website at: http://www.gazela.org/ volunteer/
Copies
will also be available onboard Gazela by the end of next week. They
will be pinned to the bulletin board. Please take one and turn it in to
the office with payment.
The navy polo shirt ($25) is required
for all crew members who wish to sail or work events. You can choose to
have your name embroidered on it as well for no extra charge. This is
not required, but most crew members think it is a good idea if you plan
to sail, as you will be bunking with lots of other people with the
exact same shirt!
There are also many other items ranging from
sleeveless shirts to watchcaps and lined jackets available. The cold
weather items may be worn over your polo if needed. The T-Shirts and
tanktops may be worn in parades of sail in place of the uniform. Lots of
crew members like to have them to wear when off duty in port or for
workdays here in Philly.
