Volunteering with the Guild
Volunteer with the Guild
Volunteers with the Philadelphia Ship Preservation Guild share a strong commitment
to preserving Philadelphia’s maritime tradition. The ships rely on the
contributions of time and effort from our volunteers to stay afloat. There
are many opportunities to become part of this effort whether your interests
are woodworking and rigging, engineering, historical research, marketing and
presentations. As a volunteer you become part of a crew. You will work alongside
the professional officers doing as they do. One minute you may find yourself
manning the helm, later painting decks. Our crew earns hours toward sailing
by volunteering time towards restoration or dockside maintenance programs.
Whether you share your daily skills, or learn new ones, you will find a niche in this diverse organization.
However, in order to sail
with the ships, our volunteers must provide volunteer service for at least
50 hours, and participate in the Guild training classes designed to
teach safe operating techniques
on
these
historic
vessels.
Our training classes are offered by experienced sailors who have been teaching
courses for over 20 years. Our volunteers learn about the history of our
ships and then share their knowledge of traditional sailing with each other
and the
public.
Join us for an unforgettable experience.
