The Race is on!

Weekly Update
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
rudder post Jeff Huffenberger & Marcus Brandt have been hard at work. The final plan regarding the rudder was to leave the pintles in place on the old rudder and repair the post only. At the same time, fashion a new rudder and commission new pintles and gudgeons. Once all the pieces are ready, the Gazela will be sent to Norfolk for haul-out. At that point, the deadwood will be checked, the gudgeons installed and the new rudder hung.
So, Jeff scarfed a new piece onto the old rudder and welded steel collars around the scarf joint. Ed Walsh and week day volunteers have primed and applied bottom paint to the soon-to-be immersed end. A strip of copper will be added just at the water line to avoid marine growth.
Marcus is building the new rudder out of white oak. Feel free to visit him near Market Street.
Other news?
  • The barge has new shelves in the center bay for added storage.
  • Gazela rig tarred
  • The steering gear has been painted
  • Jupiter went to the Riverfront Ramble and returned safely
Rudder Approved
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
hewing rudder The Guild's Board of Directors voted tonight to allow Gazela to operate in the Delaware River and the Chesapeake Bay using the repaired rudder. The Guild's goal is to get the ship hauled out before next summer's sailing season to hang the new rudder.

So assuming the rudder goes back on in a timely fashion and hurricanes stay well away from our coast, we should be heading out of Philly on October 7th.

Haunted Ship News
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Gazela's Haunted Ship returns to shore Oct 27-31st. This year, Penn's Landing and the Seaport Museum will be hosting Halloween events which will draw more visitors to the Landing. We are collaborating with both organizations to put out advertising and supportive promotional pieces.
Tony Coppola, Chris Simmons, Ed Walsh and others are working on coordinating this effort. The initial meeting will be announced shortly, via the Guild's "goblins@gazela.org" list server. If you wish to help with the organization or are willing to commit to staffing the event, please send mail to goblins@gazela.org or call the office. We will be posting the opportunity to act at other websites, so if you know of theatrically minded folk, please reach out to them. Thank you!
Training Update
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Four people availed themselves of Nick's Level I training session last weekend. Of those four, Dan Fisher and John Laurino passed the Level I test with flying colors.

Nick, Fran, and Bill will be administering a multiple choice knowledge test tied to a skills test this Saturday, from 0900 until done. If you have not passed Level I and feel you know your stuff, please plan to spend time at the ship and get evaluated.

Once folks pass Level I, they are eligible to sit in the Level II training classes planned this fall. The Guild is also planning to organize classes led by external teachers; classes for Advanced Coastal Navigation, Fire Fighting, CPR, Preservation Work (metals, woods, painting, etc), and Rigging to name a few. These courses will be set up as Electives and are intended to increase the collective knowledge within the Guild.
