Level I Evaluations - Nick Horvath
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We ran an examination of the crew who wished to be tested for Level 1 on Saturday, 23 September 2006. Of the twelve who sat for the exam, eleven passed with a score of 85 or better on the written exam, knew how to tie all 6 required knots and had a basic understanding of the pin rails.
The following crew, therefore, have advanced to Level 1 status: Danie Martin, Marcus Brandt, Rob Sawyer, Bobby Flemming, Lukas Fawsett, Tony Souza, Mike Carlson, Laura Grable, Ian Kowalczyk, Jerry Wiegand, and Lynn Yonally.
Congratulations!
Rudder Update
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The old rudder is back on the ship. The crew, under Ed Walsh's leadership, has been restoring the worm gear and wheel to operational form. Everything should be shipshape by Friday.

All the heavy work was performed safely and smoothly, thanks to the leadership of Jeff Huffenberger and the donated help from Thackray Crane and "Diver Dan" Nelson. The process was quite anticlimactic, once the rudder sank. After that, installation went smoothly as the rudder rose on its chain hoists and slipped right into place.

Schooner Race
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As announced earlier, the crew for the Schooner Race is required to be on board by Friday, October 6th at 1930 hours. Captain Brian McNamara will be briefing the crew prior to the planned departure at 0600 hours on Saturday, October 7th. If you are joining the ship in Baltimore, please make an effort to attend the meeting on Friday. You'll learn more about the race and the trip.
Captain McNamara reminds all crew that harnesses are required, as lifelines will be rigged at night. Also, he has drawn up Articles of Engagement which all crew are expected to sign. Articles, which are common practice on professional ships, declare the rights of both the Captain and the crew. If you'd like to read a copy of the Articles, follow the link below.
Jupiter's Weekend - Ralph Onesti
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We started with Jupiter being moved outside for gangway access; first by the Historical Steamboat Society. What a nice and appreciative group. We left the wall at approximately 0930 to head down river on what turned out to be a tug boat watch. We had enough time to scoot up the Schuylkill River to look at McAllister's tugs. We did a pirouette while enthusiasts took more than their share of photos....what fun. To see the look on their faces was indeed priceless.

We left the Schuylkill to proceed up river to Moran and ducked in the basin where the tugs are berthed...more pictures. I, caught up in the excitement, gave one prolonged blast on our horn. I was really hoping for a Moran tug to answer...no answer. A few seconds later, the Norwegian Cruise line vessel docked just the other side of the pier decided to respond. Their blast nearly knocked us out of the water. A cheer form our crowd demonstrated the ebullient approval.

We then did another pirouette in the basin and headed home for Penns Landing. The crew was in synchronous high gear acting like a well oiled machine. We dock only to hear Mr. Meyle saying, "Nice job captain to you and your crew". It was like getting a medal...which I share with the crew...who really deserves it.

Haunted Ship Update
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It's a go! The plan's in place, the cast and crew are gathering, and excitement is building. Penn's Landing has arranged for Good Day Philadelphia to shoot live from Gazela at 7 am, Wednesday, October 25, to help promote our combined event. Costumed crew are needed to help staff the 7 am promotion. If you can help, let the office know.
We are organizing a playbill and are soliciting ads from friends, Romans, and countrymen. If you'd like to express yourself, click on the link for Sponsorship Ads under the Haunted Ship Information below.
Ed Walsh, Chris Simmons, Mike Pettine, and Joe Gudonis will be starting ship set-up on October 17th. October 21/22 will be an all-hands day to get things ready. Tony & Fran Coppola are working with Lillian Simmons to organize the cast. We'll need about 30 people for each show, with jobs ranging from ticket sales, to guides, to spooks.
Main Line School Night Class - Sept 30th
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Last Saturday, a small group of students arrived from Main Line School Night. They were treated to a 2 hour session on Gazela, complete with sail drills and lecture. Next, they sailed on Jupiter. Here's a letter received from the group:

Dear Lenore,

What can I say.....the reports were simply glowing, from all quarters. Nancy Gabel gave me a full rundown. She said she and her husband absolutely LOVED the day (I'm sure she told you) and that every other person was equally ecstatic. Several apparently said they'd sign up again in a minute.

You and your trusty crew did a wonderful job and made it such a marvelous, memorable experience. I actually can't wait 'til the next time (please say there will be one!) so we can blast the news far and wide. [When Nancy likes something, people tend to find out!]

I simply cannot thank you enough for putting the whole "course" together in such a captivating way. I hope you feel it was worthwhile, for the "life" of the Gazela and the Guild.

All the best,

Hilary Martin, V.P. Main Line School Night

If you've followed any links today, you probably have noticed a new web design. Thanks to the effort of Donna Vito, we hope to switch over to the new design Wednesday, October 4. Over time, the sparse pages will be filled out with more content, film clips, and spotlights on members.
