Guild Education
Traditional Sailing
The mission of the Guild not only focuses on the preservation of the historic vessels in our charge but also
in providing education in traditional maritime sailing to all who wish to learn. Training classes start in the fall for all
volunteers who wish to participate. Students are tested and moved through different skill levels. Each level enables our volunteers
to advance their sailing skills and take on greater responsibilities both dockside and when we are sailing. Through this
training program we are able to pass on knowledge throughout our ranks. You must be a Ship Guild volunteer to participate
in this program. Please contact the Guild office at 215.238.0280 for the training schedule.
Preservation Education
Many participate in the Philadelphia Ship Preservation Guild to help to preserve the historic beauty of these
hundred-year-old vessels. There is great personal satisfaction to be had in restoring and operating these ships. We encourage
you to volunteer to work with the crews on the tall ship Gazela and the historic tug Jupiter to learn about preservation
techniques by working beside skilled craftsmen. Volunteers share knowledge and teach techniques to new members so that
the preservation and maintenance work can be continued.
Community Education Programs
Girard College Sea Cadet Program
In a unique partnership with the Philadelphia Ship Preservation Guild, the Girard Sea Cadet program teaches traditional
maritime skills -- along with practical science and responsibility -- to Girard sixth-graders. During the spring semester,
Guild volunteers teach an 18-week structured curriculum on Friday afternoons, either in a classroom or aboard the Gazela.
At the end of the semester, the cadets spend an overnight on the Gazela, putting into practice what they have learned by
standing watches and performing everyday shipboard duties.
Other Educational Opportunities
Similar to the Girard program, the Guild has also developed a condensed 9-week program, 3-hour programs tailored around
ship visits, and programs suited to adults and children while the ship is open to the public. We also have volunteers willing to
share their experiences on the vessels for on-site programs. If you are interested in bringing a group or class down for a
structured visit, please contact our office pspgoffice@aol.com.
